Coopers Dark Ale

March 31st, 2009 No comments

Going to try a new batch of Coopers Dark Ale as it is fantastic, shame I killed the secondary fermentation once bottled last time, so it has next to no fizz.

Day 1
OG = 1.042
used Muntons Beer Kit Enhancer instead of sugar

Day 7

SG = 1.010 – hmm seems slow

Day 8

SG = 1.006 – bottling time

Day 10

FG = 1.006 – 37 bottles of beers

Time taken : 4 Hrs 55 Mins
Min Elevation : 497ft
Max Elevation : 1403ft

Lord Stones walk – GPX File

During the 1st 1.5 miles we had 2 Geocaches to find.

1. Lord Stones – I left my EDS 10 year service gold pin in this one.

Then a 400 ft climb to the next one

2. Over the Edge – This was a tricky climb down to it, as was fairly slippery and wet.

With the Geocaches done it was time to crack on. We were going to find 2 more Geocaches at the Wain Stones, but we were already knacked so we decided against going out of our way. It was a lot tougher than I anticipated with some of the climbs very steep and tiring in the hot sun.

Bilsdale transmitter was nearly always covered in a slight mist that was lingering on during certain areas of the walk.

After walking down to Chop Gate we had a few minutes of rest and then set up the steep climb to Cock Howe. We then headed along Barker’s Ridge and Barker’s Crags, which lead us to a pond, On the map it was oddly called “Brian’s Pond” – wonder who Brian is…

There was 1.5 miles left till we were back at Lord Stones Cafe for a drink and food. Oddly enough the last 1.5 miles took us by Carlton Moor Gliding Club – which I have since found out has had all flights suspended since Dec 08.
After some food we watched the para-gliders for a while, but the winds had died down.

Saturday the allotment had another good rotavate in preparation for the planting in the next few weeks. Also my wife made a cracking pond next to the shed area.

Sunday was the turn of the garden which was looking rather untidy. Cleaned out the coldframe and planted the following salad in there

Sweden Husky Adventure

March 12th, 2009 No comments

Well it is just over a year since we went on our “Husky Adventure”. It was the best experience we have ever had.

It was a 5-day wilderness experience with lunch on the trail, overnighting at the Wilderness Lodge in cabins and the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. It was 100 miles inside the Arctic Circle. We spent the 1st day flying to Kiruna then being transfered by dog sled to the Mushers Lodge for our 1st night, where we learned how to control our own dog teams. Days 2 and 3 we were “mushers” of our own team of 3 or 4 wonderful dogs. Day 4 we took the dogs back to the Mushers Lodge where we then picked up our snowmobiles to get to the Ice Hotel. We then had a night in the Ice Hotel in a deluxe suite where it was -5C. Day 5 we spent exploring the Ice Hotel some more and the village of  Jukkasjärvi before we flew home :(
