Planted 200 Porcelain Hardneck Garlic cloves today. I much prefer the porcelain garlic as they have large strong flavoured cloves and very easy to peal. The plan is to keep half and then plant half next year, so we can keep being self sufficient in garlic for a few years.
They also produce a scape, if the scapes are left on the plants to mature, they each produce hundreds of tiny bulbils which can be planted to produce full-sized bulbs in about three years. You can also fry them and eat in stir-frys.
Just spent 3 hours at the allotment chopping wood for the stove at home. I loved using the chainsaw in anger and swinging the splitting maul for the 1st time. The shed will make a great place to store it over the winter.
Very quick update with a few pictures of my Patty Pan Squash and Tomatos
Decided with all the wet weather it was time to get the spuds out of the ground before the slugs munch them all.
Ended up with about 40kg of Desiree and Charlotte
The Shallots were wanting to come out, so they have. There are about 150 strung in the garage. Lots of empty spaces now
Popped to the plot today to pick the last of the peas and mange tout and noticed all the onions had keeled over. So time to pull them up. The car boot was packed full and time to string and hang in the garage. Some beetroot and purple top turnip pulled up as well. Globe Artichokes are coming along nicely..
Only the second time we have grown cauliflowers and the 1st was a total disaster, but this time armed with fleece to cover them, we have some lovely white caulis. Harvested today with 2 Cauliflowers we have loads and loads of broccoli, a few small courgettes, a punnet of mange tout, a few charlotte potatoes and 40 from 80 garlic.
Should have been 80 garlic, but the other 40 had rotted!!!!
Included is a quick picture update of tomatoes and chillies at home.
Took a day off work and decide to head to the plot for 4-5 hours. Oh My God…. How many weeds were there? Removed the fleece from the brasicas and knee deep in weeds. Weeds all over the onions/shallots. Weeds all over the peas/beans/in fact everything!!
Well I filled 2 dalek compost bins full off weeds and I feel like I have done a decent days work for a change
Also decided to test 1 Charlotte potato plant and got a lovely portion of them for dinner tonight, not a slug in sight.
So to add to the 1st real harvest of the year were – broad beans, broccoli, winter onions and a nice punnet of strawberries.
Some pretty poor photos of the plot.
Finally remembered to sow these this morning after forgetting to take the seeds to the plot for the last 3 weeks!!
